Mathura: A group of river activists led by Baba Jai Krishan Das, convener Yamuna Rakshak Dal, opened the sluice gates of the Hathini Kund barrage, in Haryana, "to unshackle Yamuna and allow river water to flow towards Braj area."
Giving this information on phone, Jai Krishan Das said "the gates remained opened for four hours and water flowed towards Braj , the land of Shri Krishna."
According to the 1994 agreement, signed by the then UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Delhi chief minister Madan Lal Khurana, Virbhadra Singh of Himachal, Bhajan Lal of Haryana, Bhiron singh Shekhwat of Rajasthan, Yamuna water had to be shared among the five states, with almost 90 percent going to Haryana. The agreement can be reviewed only after 2025.
River Connect Campaigners are now demanding a review of this unfair and unjust agreement which they say totally disregards the interests of downstream cities.
Jai Krishan Das said "even three percent flow as stipulated in the agreement for UP was being denied."
The National Green Tribunal last June had asked Haryana to release ten cusecs to maintain a minimum flow. But even this was not being followed, charged river activist Shravan Kumar Singh.
