Agra: The key to agricultural development leading to diffused prosperity lay in farmers diversifying and "crop-planning," the director general of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) T Mahapatra said, after releasing a book by Dr. Bibhuti Bhushan Bareek, former director of Baikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management, at a function held on Sunday evening at Youth Hostel hall here.
Mahapatra said farmers in Gujarat had shown how better crop planning and diversification had led to increased profits.
He said the key to maximising profit in agriculture was crop planning, diversification and switch over to newer and better produce. Union government is keen to help double the profits of farmers by 2022. This is possible if farmers opt for diversity and crop planning in a scientific manner.
Mahapatra released a book by Dr. BB Bareek, titled "Productivity and Income enhancement through Kisan Credit Card scheme".
The book focuses on salient features of the Kisan Credit Card scheme. Bareek told Samiksha Bharti News Service that the study is based on the empirical research covering the region of western UP, examining in detail the impact of KCC scheme by comparing the KCC and non-KCC farmers across economic and social categories on the basis of use of production, inputs, total cost of production, productivity of crops and dairy animals and gross crop and disposakble incomes available with the farmers.
The main suggestion in the book is that the farm adivisory services should be tied up with KCC loans in order to achieve efficiency in production of crops and assignment of annual targets for financing minimum number of KCC borrowers and amount of disbursal of credit for the public and private sector banks operating rural areas for the successive years and till its saturation in the service area.
ICAR director general said the survey in the book proved that the Kisan credit card scheme was benefitting farmers. Agriculture scientists should motivate cultivators to adop better techniques, practices and link their activities with marketing networks, storage facilities available.
